Whilst scrubbing playa dust off of tarps and tents after labor day, 2 of us happened across a delightful little restaurant in the far-off reaches of civilization--that mysterious netherworld known as the valley. The cook was 'Big Mama' and she made the most incredible cajun food either one of us had ever eaten...and there’s at least 4 trips to N’awlin’s ‘twixt us. It wuz hot sauce heaven, honey.

Big Mama Poetry (pick 2 ryhmin’ lines to continue the beautiful poem):

As I sit with my pale ale, I am frail.
Oh hail Big Mama, when will yer catfish bail me out of this...hale?

This pilgrimage we’ve made,
not only for the lemonade,
but for legs of frogger,
(and the store-bought lager).

They was gators a’snappin’
and a baby a’crappin’

as a rabid weazel sat up and said...

and I love good snapper + good people.

The weazel mostly loved good rhyme,
ate the snapper,
and took his damn time.

o to be a vegetarian at Big Mama’s,
Like private parts to the Gods am I,
They play with me for their sport.
Looks like cornbread is my name.

Though at first, Big Mama’s seemed far,
Only 20 minutes by car...

..for a smackalicious feast of collard greens,
blackened snapper and rice and red beans.

Patton Biography

Around 1936, my grandparents, Roy Jr. and Jessie Mae Patton owned and operated Patton Hotel & Cafe in New Orleans. They inherited it from my great-grandfather after his death in 1934. The Pattons' were the very first Creoles in New Orleans to own and operate a hotel/cafe. Roy and Jessie eventually sold the business and migrated to Dallas, Texas to open a cafe on Bryant Street in the downtown area.

Roy died in 1956, and left jessie the sole proprietor. At the age of fourteen I began commuting back and forth between New Orleans and Texas to help my grandmother with the operation of the cafe.

In 1991, Jessie's home burned to the ground. She became very ill and moved to California to live with me until her death on August 4th, 1995. The name "Big Mama," I called her. Jessie was born in North Shrie Port in 1914. I would like to keep my family's tradition of secret recipes alive. So here I am.

"I am the Big Mama now!"
