Ganesh became more popular with western audiences after Homer dressed like the deity on The Simpsons. Now you can actually buy a Ganesh action figure online from Jesus Christ Superstore. (Although they were sold out last time I checked.)

FAKE HISTORY: The toy that caused a near riot at Fisher Price in 1979, Ganesh was the brain child of Ivan Abdu. Hearing a call from the Indian God himself, Ivan was given the task of introducing holy figures of India to the children of America. He proceeded to create a prototype of the Ganesh toy and proposed it to Fisher Price. Surprisingly, it was met with much enthusiasm and marketed immediately. For the first few years of its history as a toy, religious groups protested its sales, saying it was sacrilegious and a slap in the face of their religion. This protest escalated in a near seizure of the Fisher Price factory in Chicago and over 100 arrests. The controversy still rages on, and so do the toy sales. Over one million Ganesh dolls were sold in 1991.
